Anyone starting a business, whether we are talking about a hair salon or a furniture retailer, needs to begin the proceedings with a mission statement.  This is one of those things that people read about, they are vaguely aware of, but it doesn’t seem important enough to do; or it is something they will say they will get around to it when they have some spare time.

A mission statement is your North Star in business.  It guides your every business decision, or at least it should do that. A mission statement is a single sentence that describes a company’s fundamental purpose by explaining why the business exists. It articulates to employees and the public what the company’s purpose is. Mission statements are incredibly varied because they are unique to each company.

Write a mission statement and then post it in a prominent place, on the wall, for all to see.  You won’t forget it that way, and your clients will know what you stand for.

This “must have” may not appear on most lists, but we believe it is vitally important.  A small business owner must have a strong belief in themselves.  Starting a business, and keeping it afloat during the lean times, requires a strong will, determination, and a willingness to ride out the tough seas.

You can have the best skills in the industry, and your social media presence can be outstanding, but if you do not genuinely believe in your ability, and you do not genuinely believe you will succeed, chances are you will not.

We debated what to list as #3.  We wanted, at first, to put a strong support system as #3, but truthfully that is not possible for some people, and we only wanted to list things which are possible for everyone. Therefore, our third “must have” is a strong online social media presence.

Advertising and marketing your business can be expensive.  Radio ads, billboards, newspaper ads, these things require some serious cash, and very few people, just staring out in a beauty salon, have serious cash.  Still, marketing is vitally important.

Your best marketing took is your own personality and your own skill set; after that, the best way you can serve your business is to learn the SEO strategies and conquer social media with your presence.  Social media is free marketing. It reaches thousands in your area.  It has success written all over it, and virtually anyone can be proficient at it with a little research and learning.
