A Hair Salon Franchise? Reasons to Run Away from Them

Thinking about joining a hair salon franchise?  We understand why you are but do yourself a favor and read this article before you sign that contract.

We are Salon & Spa Galleria, serving the Greater Fort Worth Metro area with twenty-three very affordable salon suite rental locations. Call us at 817-917-1416 for more information. We can show you a way to become a salon owner without going into deep debt.

The hair salon franchise model.

The classic franchise model involves using an established business model, using the parent company’s logo and sales materials, following the franchise procedures, and paying an up-front fee, and sometimes a monthly fee, to do so.

It is a successful model to be sure and has worked for many people in many different industries.  The framework is already established. There is a team of professionals standing by to help you over the rough patches of business ownership; and successful franchises have a better than average chance of doing quite well financially.

So, what’s the problem? The franchise fees are expensive, oftentimes $50,000 or more, and that means it is well beyond the financial capabilities of the average person.

What, then, can the average person, who is not rich, do?

The salon rental model.

The hair salon space rental model is much less expensive.  In fact, we will go so far as to say it is an inexpensive way to go into business.  With this model, you are simply renting a salon suite where you can operate your one-person hair salon.  There are, of course, expenses in starting any business, but our average client at Salon & Spa Galleria is able to open their doors for business with an investment of $5000 or less.

Affordable? Monthly rental fees are in the $300-$750 range, much less than the lease on a retail shop/space, and at many agencies, secondary expenses are included in the rental package.  For example, at Salon and Spa Galleria, included in the monthly rental fee are the following:

  • All utilities
  • WiFi
  • Free HDTV
  • 24/7 access
  • Free workshops
  • A 26-step business plan
  • A personalized web page
  • Furniture if needed

And this all means much lower overhead which means much more affordable for the average person.

Which is right for you?

We simply cannot answer this question.  There are many who choose the franchise business model, and they do quite well.  For them, paying the franchise fee is worth it.  For others, not being associated with a “brand name” is more appealing, having the freedom to establish their own image is attractive, and not paying an exorbitant franchise fee is also a strong reason to go the salon rental route.

The only thing we can say, with certainty, is the salon rental option is much less expensive than the franchise option.
